OBSERVATION ON TEACHER


Planning For Teaching

Ibu Sumiyati is my cooperating teacher at SMA Negeri 1 Cangkringan. She is teaching Biology for Grades 10, 11 and 12 under the MIPA program. Ibu Sumiyati prepares her lesson and learning activities ahead of time. She has syllabus of instruction that she use as a guide in teaching.

Preparing Lessons and Materials

Ibu Sumiyati prepares the PowerPoint before going to her class. She ensures that her PowerPoint has pictures that explain the process she has explaining. Like for example, she included the picture of how Bile is produce inside the body when teaching Grade 11 about the Excretory System.

Aside from that, I frequently saw her in her table reading the Biology book when she has spare time. For me, this is an implication that she studies and prepares her lesson before going to the class. She is a great example for me as a future educator.

Teaching in Class

I observed Ibu Sumiyati in the Grade 11 class. What is notable to her is she inculcates value formation aside from just teaching the subject. When I entered the classroom, she noticed that the students didn’t clean the classroom. She first asks the students to clean their classroom before she proceeds to the lesson.


In terms of teaching strategies and methods, Ibu Sumiyati follows the learner-centered, collaborative and discovery learning approach. She just gave an introduction about the topic, which is about the Excretory System, and then she grouped the students into 5, each having 5 members. Then she gave them this small envelope that 5 questions is inside. The students will pick one of those questions and will look for the answer in that question. Then, they will find the student in the other with the same question that he or she picks. They will discuss their answers and then go back to their group mates to discuss their answers.

I admired the strategy used by Ibu Sumiyati and I will definitely do that strategy to the Philippines. That teaching strategy was not only beneficial to the students but also to the teacher.

Measurement and Evaluation

She gives short quizzes to the students to assess if they learned the concepts. Furthermore, she used the books to get the activities that the students can answer or do. She also gives them some assignments.
